Evo Morales was quoted at the World Social Forum this month as saying that 'If the peoples of the world are not capable of burying capitalism, capitalism will bury the Earth.' Surely in coming to understand this basic and frighteningly obvious fact, our discussion about the way forward is placed on a whole new plane, because if we are to achieve a truly human society in future, we urgently need to protect the natural conditions required for life on Earth, because this now called into question and placed in jeopardy by the continuation of the old social system in which everything was geared to the production of capital. We can surely not allow the uncontrollable system of accumulating capital and its defenders to blindly and compulsively destroy the world, surely all thinking people have a moral duty to the unborn generations, to resist the oppresion and exploitation, indeed the destruction of the Earth and her peoples, to reclaim the Earth as our sacred heritage and home, we are after all lings of the Earth, things of Earth, Earthlings.
Our consciousness as 21st century humans is stretching, to a planetary awareness and we are stretching ourselves practically in ways unimagined before to overcome our previous limitations, because the world we are striving for is now clearly within reach and within view, but yet so far away. Onwards then my friends, for we are not compelled but freely choose this mission to defend our sacred Earth by seizing the gift and opportunity contained within the present. So now finally our generation discovers who we are if we are to be anything, we must be the defenders of the future. We are not laying claim to anyone's power, we are seizing our own.
